Voss Historical Archaeology Lab

Main content start

The Voss Historical Archaeology Lab (HistArch Lab) at the Stanford Archaeology Center is a meeting point for research and collaboration about the archaeology of the modern world.

The HistArch Lab provides an interactive workspace with facilities and supplies for processing, analyzing, and curating archaeological collections, including an artifact washing station and an assortment of computers, microscopes, balances, photography equipment, and other tools and instruments.

A comparative type collection holds hundreds of example specimens of ceramics, glass, metals, and other artifacts spanning the early 18th through early 20th centuries. Additionally, a 400+-volume reference library includes hard-to-find and out-of-print artifact identification guides.

The Historical Archaeology Lab provides a secure location for external collections loans to Stanford archaeology faculty and students, facilitating research partnerships and collaborations with museums and public agencies.
